Media Education Center
Basic Concept
The Media Education Center of the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd picks up and analyses social changes that are conditioned by media technology developments. It explores and develops suitable pedagogical concepts to support media education processes within and outside of educational institutions.
Aims and Action Areas
Coordination and Strengthening of Research and Education
The Media Education Center does not only realise research and development projects. Furthermore, it serves as a tool to coordinate existing research projects at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd within a significant innovation field of school education – the Media Education. The installation of interdisciplinary working contexts in the fields of fundamental sciences, teaching methodologies and technology development are central elements for the innovation of media education at schools. Further, the establishment of cooperations between the first, second and third phase of teacher training and the connection of scientific insights to practical school experiences are of crucial importance.
Through interlinking research, teaching, development and school practical fields of experience an empirically founded development of innovative concepts for media education shall be achieved that regards the complexity of educational contextual factors.
Innovation of Teaching
Digital technologies open special potentials to innovation of university teaching and school education given in the form of e-learning and blended learning approaches.
The Media Education Center promotes the development and implementation of innovative teaching concepts by including digital technologies and supports the extension of training offers in collaboration with existing facilities.
In order to support these activities, we are currently setting up a Media Education Lab (ME.Lab), in which teaching concepts and media products for learning using digital media can be developed and tested.

Project »ProMedia Primar 3P«
Development of professional media pedagogical competences for designing digitally supported learning environments in primary education for the three phases of teacher training
Project Idea
Although the use of digital technologies has long been considered as fourth cultural technology and/or essential key qualification the primary schools which are responsible for the introduction in the cultural technologies do not support this development in such a way as that all children do receive a fundamental media education. Moreover, the innovative potentials of digital media for the representation of information or for the digital support of decision making, operating and managing processes are rarely used at primary school so far. Study results demonstrate that the integration of media education contents at primary school is still not taking place nationwide.
For this reason, the project »ProMedia Primar 3P« aims in eight subprojects to develop and test new concepts for the integration of digital media into primary school at the interface between primary school pedagogy, teaching methodology, pedagogical psychology and media didactics. The focus of the project is thereby in particular to support the competencies of future teachers to use digital media reflectively in class.
About the Project »Digital Learning Elementary School« of the German Telekom Foundation
Many elementary school teachers need more support when it comes to teaching well with digital media. For this purpose they must be trained appropriately. Therefore the Deutsche Telekom Foundation supports the pedagogical universities of Ludwigsburg and Schwäbisch Gmünd as well as the universities of Bremen, Hamburg and Potsdam which have been selected through a tender procedure. Until 2018 they develop and test concepts for the productive use of digital media in primary education.
