Recap: International Online Conference “Digitality & AI in Contexts of Heterogeneity”

On 5 December 2025, the international online conference “Digitality & AI in Contexts of Heterogeneity” took place successfully, bringing together around 70 participants from across the globe. We thank all presenters, moderators, and participants for making this intensive and inspiring afternoon possible.

Organisers

The conference was organised by the Centre for Media Education (ZfM) at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd, in cooperation with the research and early-career network “Shaping Heterogeneity – Developing Strong Primary Schools.”

Focus and themes

The diverse programme showcased how digitality and artificial intelligence can be designed, critically reflected, and further developed through research in heterogeneous learning contexts—ranging from multilingual teaching and learning, digital mathematical learning processes, AI literacy, and teacher education to questions of digital school and organisational development.

Highlights

  • Nine panels with 18 presentations on AI in primary education, AI in teacher education, multilingual learning settings, robotics & religion, and digital organisational development.
  • An inspiring keynote by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marlon Valencia (York University, Canada) on participatory and holistic approaches to AI in teacher education.
  • International contributions from Switzerland, Austria, Canada, and Turkey, underscoring the growing global relevance of digital and inclusive education.

Outlook

The conference concluded with a preview of an edited volume in the Waxmann series (2026), which will consolidate key insights and research perspectives from the event.
